Reflecting on the mini-boom of globally successful productions from her homeland, Irish actress and playwright Roisin Gallagher begins with a laugh. “Nothing has been injected into the water, the potatoes haven’t all of a sudden given us all this creative power. It’s always been here, it just takes one person who holds power and finance to say yes. It takes one company, one television network, one commissioner to hear a story and say, ‘This is great; let’s try it’.
Having studied in Glasgow and spent time working in London, Gallagher is now based in her hometown of Belfast with her husband and young sons. And in terms of the national character, she observes, “We have a way of dealing with trauma or difficulty by laughing at it, and laughing at ourselves as well.
My husband’s Scottish, and he was, like, ‘What is going on here? This is the weirdest gathering I’ve ever I’ve ever encountered.’When we meet 35-year-old Shiv, she’s a shaky five months, 17 days and six hours into her recovery from alcoholism. She’s been living in London for nearly five years and is returning to Dublin for the funeral of her beloved granny. Unbeknown to her family, the once-aspiring artist is broke, unemployed and planning to stay longer than the anticipated weekend.
