White Riot is a fast-paced collage film chock full of urgent music, charting the Rock Against Racism movement in 1970s Britain. | REVIEW

Some documentaries are like time machines. Whatever their subject or purpose, they bring us to a time and place that’s highly specific and full of portent – like London in 1977, when Margaret Thatcher ruled Britannia, the Sex Pistols went through two record companies in two months, and anti-racists fought the National Front – and the Metropolitan Police – on the streets of suburban Lewisham.

Saunders was a rock photographer by day, activist by night. He was appalled when Eric Clapton came out in support of Enoch Powell, a British politician who wanted to send all immigrants of colour back where they came from. Saunders wrote a steaming letter to the musical press, calling on musicians to stand up against racism. Rock Against Racism was born, and it quickly became the focus for a national movement opposed to the growing influence of the National Front.

, the graphic design of which was the very essence of punk. It was full of torn up headlines, repasted and overprinted cut-outs, in-your-face polemical writing and lots of pictures of gigs – many of them shot by Syd Shelton, who had started his career in Sydney.
