NSW Roads Minister Natalie Ward has failed in her push to move to the lower house, losing a preselection battle to run in the ultra-safe seat of Davidson in Sydney’s northern suburbs.

In a hugely damaging result to the NSW Liberals’ push to boost the number of women in parliament, the party’s most senior woman in NSW has failed in her bid to move to the lower house.Steven Siewert Ward was determined to shift from the upper house to the lower house to boost the number of women in that chamber. However, she lost to former Mike Baird staffer Matt Cross.

The minister for roads as well as women’s safety still has four years of her upper house term remaining. Ward’s loss in the Davidson preselection battle means there will be no vacancy for Holsworthy MP Melanie Gibbons in the upper house, who also failed in her preselection.Ahead of her preselection, the “party expects, and the electorate expects capable, smart women who have done something in their lives to be able to participate”.
