Despite representing 13 per cent of the global population, wealthy nations have already secured the lion's share of coronavirus vaccines.

Wealthy nations representing a fraction of the global population - including Australia - have already bought up over half the promised COVID-19 vaccine stocks, an Oxfam study showed, as health and finance ministers of G20 countries meet to discuss the global pandemic.

"Access to a life-saving vaccine shouldn't depend on where you live or how much money you have," Oxfam America's Robert Silverman said. The five leading vaccine candidates currently in late-stage trials will be able to supply 5.9 billion doses, enough to inoculate about three billion people, the Oxfam report said.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he would begin rolling out a vaccine in America as soon as next month, contradicting doubts expressed by a top health expert in his administration who said a jab was unlikely to be widely available until mid-2021. The global economy has been devastated by the pandemic, with many nations still maintaining restrictions on their populations to contain fresh outbreaks.

There were also positive signs in South Africa where authorities announced borders would be reopened to most countries from next month - part of a wider easing of anti-virus curbs as infection figures improve. This would only be possible if pharmaceutical corporations allow vaccines to be produced as widely as possibly by freely sharing their knowledge free of patents.

Not sure but maybe it is because rich nations have the ability to distribute vaccines to developing nations... Aust has already pledged to supply South Pacific nations with vaccine. But I guess that narrative isn’t sensationalist enough for SBS.

That means the wealthy nations are paying for the vaccines. Wealthy nations are particularly generous, especially the United States of America. They will ensure that all peoples of the world will be cared for. Except for the Chicoms. I don’t give a rat’s ass for those criminals.

And guesswho pays for the poor countries share...

So the production of the vaccines is limited and once initial stocks are used no further vaccine will be manufactured?

Look after yourself first so you can look after others ?

The poorest countries will be pushed to the bottom of the queue. The usual despicable behavior by the Murdock greed . The same Murdoch and QAnon who pushed COVID-19 denials and conspiracies.

Good.

U mean the death vaccine

Who'd take a vaccine for this illness? Already they've made it clear it won't be all that effective, & less so for those at risk (elderly & others). We have great treatment & prevention now, & the immunity threshold is low. Let the healthy get it to provide protection save our $

Africa has the lions share of anti-malarials, so they don't really need a vaccine.

Why would lions have a share? 🤔

This surprises you? “Read all about it! Major scoop. Democratically elected leaders look after their people first.” Did you expect them to look after their constituents last! What a hoot?

We work hard to gain wealth to protect ourselves in the event of precisely such catastrophes. However, once having reasonably cared for ourselves, we have an obligation to help those less fortunate and we will.

they can have mine too.

The idiot trifecta. 🇦🇺

I’m donating my vaccine allocation to any WHO bureaucrat who wants to have it jabbed into them. If they don’t die, then any poor person who thinks they need it can have some.

Western liberal democracies establish conditions in which innovation & wealth generation flourish. That’s something socialist & theocratic countries should aspire to. Well done us.

I'm willing to donate mine.

Despite representing 13% of the global population wealthy nations do 99% of the development of vaccines then give it away to poorer countries.

*intelligent nations

Gonna be awkward if China develops the safe one

There is no vaccine- cmon, pick up your game

'SMIRKO,BOZO & TAX-NO'🤔🤣😂🕵️

Not to mention the lion’s share of deaths.

judyvw2 they dont work

What a picture of 3 LOONY LEADERS!! Where were they dug up from!!👎🤪👎🤪😂🤣

white entitlement

What is the suggestion? That my taxes be spent on making sure someone else in a foreign country receives the vaccine before me? My reaction:

nothing wrong with that at all. who do you think paid for the research and development of said vaccine?

More fool them. Unproven vaccine, complete with indemnity for the manufacturer, for virus never isolated which has a 99.6% survival rate and affects a minute %of global population.

You don't see the butcher or the baker going hungry now, do you? 💁‍♂️

And we’ll end up contributing to the cost of the other 87%

But why? Safe vaccine will be available after several years? Earlier means turning people into guinea pigs.

Good, means the citizens of those countries money is being spent on those citizens that earnt it, maybe others should try paying more to where they live and they will get vaccines and stuff too.

Damn that pesky capitalism!!!
