Have we ever seen the Prime Minister as comfortable in his own skin as when he took the stage at the Australian Christian Churches’ Gold Coast conference? This is what struck me as I watched him holding forth on faith and community in a speech that’s being intensely scrutinised for clues – signs? – of what makes Scott Morrison tick.
A commentator on a religious news site has accused the media of “othering” Morrison and his Pentecostal community, casting them as exotic deviants. Well, I’m not sure I can rationalise away my uneasiness about Morrison’s apparent view of himself as some sort of medium for the divine. In this, I might claim to speak for Australia’s secular-ish majority – if it wasn’t for my impression secular Australia has become tongue-tied on the subject of faith.
Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese Anthony Albanese said he had “no intention” of commenting on Morrison’s claim he’d been called upon to do God’s work. This time Anthony Albanese said he had “no intention” of commenting on Morrison’s claim he’d been called upon to do God’s work, before commenting: “I think that the idea that God is on any political side is no more respectful than the idea that when someone’s sporting team wins it is because of some divine intervention.
However, most believers, by definition, must find a place in their psyche for some notion of the supernatural. So I wonder if the fixation with Morrison and Pentecostalism, with its religious literalism and exuberance, is mostly snobbery.Getty ImagesAll I can do is evaluate the earthly evidence about the faithful in politics. The staunchly Catholic Tony Abbott struggled to keep a lid on his zeal – as Health Minister in the mid-2000s he tried to block the abortion pill, RU-486.
Theres no present without a past so we study history & culture There's no future without imagination so we study science & there's no imagination without expression so we study art & music It's about learning & reading Sadly God & religion negates it all along with common sense.
In practical terms, criticising specific religions will open you up to prosecution under various types of anti-discrimination and anti-hate crime legislation. Then there are the informal sanctions. Try critiquing Aboriginal myths about the origin of human beings, for example.
As a devoted Christian. We are taught by living our faith through action and not words. We can’t help being attacked, but we will persevere in it.
It's not religion that's the problem, it's that ScoMoses favours such a showbiz, snake-oil, disreputable version of it. A Prime Minister shouldn't be giving advertorials to a commercial enterprise disguised as a church.
When the Australian constitution was drafted humanity was not aware of what avaricious, manipulative, warmongering, organised paedophile networks religions are. Now that we know there is no reason the constitution cannot be amended to remove freedom of religion.
Believe in whatever god or spirit you wish, but don’t let that interfere with how you do your job. Your personal beliefs are simply personal. They should not hinder your ability to work in a secular government or impact anyone who doesn’t believe. FaithIsNotAnExcuse
LyndaFrench19 Can only read a paragraph because paywalled. But how about SMH? Changing their reporting of Morrison?
This religion is based on a ‘paedeofile’’ founder and his son who now runs it knew that. What else do you need to know. Pop up religioions
If you can’t respect a person’s religion you aren’t respecting a person’s right to believe Religion isn’t just faith, it’s a way of life & Christianity laid the foundations to ours Masking hatred with political innuendo won’t detract the fact that you’re a bigot & it’s on show
Politicians are free to follow their religious beliefs but they need to keep their beliefs to themselves and not inflict them on the population.
Your right to worship fairies stops when it impacts my life. Play with your toys in your home, that’s fine, but leave them out of the public sphere and don’t invoke your fairies on behalf of the Australian people, it’s offensive to the secular. auspol religion pentacostal
