Carlton’s superstar defender Jacob Weitering is set to become one of the highest-paid players in the AFL after St Kilda informally pitched him a multi-year offer worth $1.5 million per season.
While the length of contract dangled before Weitering may raise eyebrows, it’s not dissimilar to the 10-year contract offered to 24-year-oldA senior source at Carlton, who also wouldn’t speak on the record due to the confidentiality of player contracts, told The Scoop the club was aware of St Kilda’s approach but was adamant that Weitering would remain at Ikon Park and would be well remunerated to re-sign with the Blues.
St Kilda list boss Stephen Silvagni, a legendary defender for Carlton, was running the list at Princes Park when the club took Weitering at pick one in the national draft in 2015, ahead of key forward Josh Schache. Schache’s career has never really taken off. He kicked 25 goals from 17 games in his two years at Brisbane before being traded to the Western Bulldogs. He’s now at his third club, Melbourne, and has managed only 76 games, fewer than half of what Weitering has played.
