A retired police officer has been jailed for up to two decades for sexually abusing his two young stepdaughters.
In sentencing, District Court Auxiliary Judge Gordon Barrett said the victims, who are now adults, "had a right to protection" and that his abuse was a breach of trust. The Criminal Law Consolidation Act was changed last year, replacing the charge of "unlawful sexual relationship with a child" with "sexual abuse of a child".The aggravated assault charge involved the officer grabbing one of the girls and pushing her up against a wall after an argument when she was a teenager.
In sentencing, Judge Barrett said the man had an unremarkable upbringing and left school to attend the police academy. He had no prior criminal record.
