‘Responding ... that’s the normal way of doing it’: Hewitt fires shot at Kyrgios

Australia lost both their matches on the opening night of the United Cup.Australia’s United Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt has taken aim at Nick Kyrgios over his last-minute withdrawal from the tournament, criticising the enigmatic tennis star for a lack of communication with his team.

“Probably just responding,” Hewitt said when asked how communication could be improved with the world No.22. “That’s the normal way of doing it. There was a little while [between response].“It’s more just the communication. If it was just worrying Nick, that’s one thing. When it revolves around the team and other people and their preparation to be playing the best they possibly can leading into the Australian Open, that’s probably the hardest thing.

Ajla Tomljanovic and Jason Kubler will play on Friday night, with Sam Stosur expected to compete in the mixed doubles to follow.On the day before the United Cup, American coach David Witt walked into the pre-tournament press conference and had his team laughing almost before they’d sat down. “We’ve all known each other for a really long time,” Keys said after she led her country to an early 2-0 lead against the Czech Republic on the opening day of the United Cup in Sydney.

Witt barely raised a sweat on the bench as Fritz and Keys rolled to singles wins inside Ken Rosewall Arena, forcing the Czechs’ top-ranked player, Petra Kvitova, into a must-win match against Pegula on Friday to keep the tie alive before the second men’s singles match and mixed doubles rubber.
