Multimillion-dollar funding rounds for research grants are being delayed by months as researchers are asked to rewrite 150-word statements.

was told to explain why improving Indigenous wellbeing was in the national interest, she was dumbfounded.

“No one knows what the ARC wants, and I also received an email that this was the last chance to revise before the CEO exercises potential veto.” According to the researcher, the strengthening of the process under new CEO Judi Zielke has resulted in people being asked to resubmit their statements multiple times. “I have heard of people having to do it up to four times. Some of the things she is asking people to change or add to an already-full 150 words is just ridiculous.”

Successful research grants in Australia, unlike similar countries overseas, are not announced to a timetable, but left to political whim. While ARC_Tracker says they can roughly estimate when a grant round should be announced, it appears obvious that delays of many months are now in play as NITs go backwards and forwards between the ARC and individual researchers.
