Australia’s two remaining oil refineries in Geelong and Brisbane were on the brink of shutting down just like the closure of ExxonMobil’s refinery in Altona. Now they've been handed a lifeline | NickToscano1

“The outcome will also allow Ampol to progress alternative future energy uses for this strategic site, preserving manufacturing skills that will be critical for success in the energy transition.”The oil refining sector has been under enormous pressure since the onset of the COVID-19 crisis last year, as travel bans to arrest the spread of infections gutted demand and hammered their profit margins.

“Today’s announcement by the federal government provides important and welcome structural support,” he said.

NickToscano1 This is a fucked use of public money.

aussiewongm NickToscano1 Shame there’s no mention of any quality improvement so Aussie fuel standards can be lifted from their current dirty level.

NickToscano1 Not sure this level of support will be enough - the refineries are critical. We need secure onshore fuel supplies in an increasingly uncertain world. Also we need our strategic oil supplies, currently in the USA, to be shipped to Australia and stored locally ASAP AngusTaylorMP

NickToscano1 I maybe the odd one out but having onshore oil processing appears to me more about self-sufficiency rather than jobs per se. Crazy I know but it seems such ideas have become strangely fashionable again with the fracturing of globalism. She'll be right mate no longer cutting it?

NickToscano1 You think deja vu? Yes, labor in 2008, handed free cash to Holden. Do i need to tell what happened?

NickToscano1 A national disgrace. Nationalise them. Why pay $2bln to cartels. Our Governments are incompetent, borderline corrupt.

NickToscano1 $2b for 1250 jobs... insane welfare

NickToscano1 Thanks, I noticed. All the 128.9 and less have raised to 149.9. Great work.

NickToscano1 All regular jobs are moving to India/Singapore/Asia. Casual/3&6months/gov temp projects are mostly found here. Regular bills needs regular jobs

NickToscano1 Throwing money at a sunset industry.

NickToscano1 After this pandemic we have learnt that you need to be somewhat self sufficient. Anyone who disagrees with this is a fool or a moron. Take your pick.

PM's $2b fuel security package keeps remaining oil refineries live | Sky News AustraliaPrime Minister Scott Morrison has announced a $2 billion fuel security package aimed at keeping Australia’s last remaining oil refineries live while saving 1200 jobs.\n\nMr Morrison announced the package at the Ampol oil refinery in Brisbane, one of the last remaining refineries along with Viva Energy refinery in Geelong, where he spruiked the importance of fuel security in Australia.\n\nHe said the government’s plan to “preserve these refineries” through the $2 billion investment will keep them operating out to 2030.\n\nThe plan will see 1200 jobs saved in both Brisbane and Geelong, and will also impact contractors operating out of both facilities.\n\nThe security package will involve a 1.8 cent per litre support payment for refined fuel in Australia over the next nine years which will provide additional assistance in the face of price pressures.\n\n“It supports the refinery and Ampol here to be able to keep in business, to ensure that they can keep the doors open and do this on a commercial basis,” Mr Morrison said.\n\nThe prime minister said the package also addressed national security and ensured Australia’s fuel self-sufficiency.\n\n“We need to be self-sufficient, we need to stand up for ourselves, and this policy, this program, this very significant commitment is ensuring Australia will be self-sufficient.” \n ScottMorrisonMP So intervening in free markets? Marx would be very proud. The right has given up on its ideology and is now just seeking short-sighted populist solutions to problems that they create. Anyone who votes for these morons deserves what they get ScottMorrisonMP Errr 2 billion dollars for 1200 jobs… okkkkkk ScottMorrisonMP Just nationalise them ffs.
