After 12 years in the one town, the pensioner said she had no option but to pack up and leave when her beloved two-bed rental was sold, leaving her priced completely out of the market. 9News

said she had no option but to pack up and leave when her beloved two-bed rental was sold in October, leaving her priced completely out of the market.

She's even back at work, supplementing her pension with a few casual hours a week at the nearby Batemans Bay Soldiers Club."There are a lot of things wrong with it but I can live with it. I've made it comfortable for myself." Worst of all, on a pensioner's budget, she says petrol is too expensive to make the almost five-hour drive to Merimbula and back to see her kids and grandkids."But I'll never get back there."Nationwide, house rentals have been surging since the early months of the pandemic, up on average a staggering $170, or more than a third, according to SQM Research. Units aren't far behind, up almost 30 per cent to $480 over a similar period.

In Pyrmont, one 26-year-old digital marketer accepted his $150 rent increase — bargained down from $200 — without seriously considering moving, after seeing nightmare stories of people applying for dozens of places without success elsewhere in the city. Housing expert Professor Nicole Gurran said the housing market was moving a lot more as people returned to work in full force, combined with international students and immigration, and that was always seen first in the rental market.

"And until we've got a housing system that protects the needs and the rights of renters, you know, of course, a for-profit provider is going to maximise their profits in most cases."

Your landlord has just slugged you with a huge rent increase - what can you do now?One of the many ways Australians are being pinched by the rising cost of living is by increasing rental prices. Here's what you need to know. 9News Buy your own house!!! Landlords are not a charity - deal with it or Aussie Gov built affordable rentals.. As a Landlord, if the interest rates go up so must rent. If you don’t like it don’t rent my house - i will then sell it which will increase the vacancy rate and rent! It's going to get alot worse . This time next year people will be begging for it to be like it is right now compared to how it will be . The hundreds of thousands of extra immigrants being flooded in isn’t helping. Apparently low unemployment is a bigger problem for the country than being able to find shelter.
