When key figures in Australia's renewable energy industry met in Victoria last week, finding and training up the future clean energy workforce was top of the agenda.

The renewables industry has exploded in Victoria, with ambitious energy targets set by the state government and an abundance of job opportunities in the fledgling sector to be realised.Renewable Energy proponents and the state government are predicting more than 6,000 new jobs in Gippsland

But in a job market crying out for people to fill 86,000 vacancies in rural and regional Australia, doubt remains on the ability to fill roles in the new industry. Ms O'Connor said mediocre participation rates should be seen as an opportunity to bring more people into the workforce. "[We look at] what level and what skills. Who is not in the sector, but could be in the sector, because they've got skills that could transition."

Because we haven't been training and upskilling people for decades. Now we are suffering in every industry

Why didn't the government make renewable energy specialists a priority career from the '70s to the '10s? Industry wants people with specific skills immediately but they'll put them in insecure work & discard them fast when they're not needed. Auspol

What do we need: Mechanical, Electrical Engineers for design, construction. Piping and Instrumentation engineers for construction and maintenance. Fitters, turners, mechanics, electricians for maintenance. Rebuild Unis and TAFE and we can have skills in 3 to 5 yrs. auspol

That where slowing the redundant industries and transitioning the workforce 'should have' come into play.

Well, the engineers are here, but the census says that most of the engineering graduates in Australia work outside of engineering, as the engineering jobs have not been here.

The government probably want to bring in workers for this. Don’t bother with all the graduates we churn out but don’t employ. If Australia want to sell education they have a responsibility to employ and train the graduates, not look overseas for a cheaper option.

Where are the jobs posted?
