Billionaire Andrew Forrest’s huge ambition and drive, along with an appetite for risk-taking, has shaped the economy and the fortunes of his company.

The acquisition cemented Forrest’s inclusion in The Australian Financial Review Business People of the Year list.

That won’t deter the Rich Lister. But some investors in Fortescue Metals Group, the iron-ore miner Forrest founded, have been dubious about the diversion of time and money into a new direction that offers only delayed financial returns rather than the immediacy of highly valuable iron ore exports. Forrest frequently derides the gas industry, for example, but Squadron Energy is also seeking customers for a possible LNG import terminal in NSW on the premise it can be converted to hydrogen later.His relentless concentration on execution as well as risk-taking has been evident ever since Forrest defied industry incredulity he could build a fledgling FMG into “the third force” in iron ore behind BHP and Rio. He exceeded everyone’s expectations – except, no doubt, his own.
