Rebel NSW Liberal MP Matthew Mason-Cox has been expelled from the party after he infuriated Premier Gladys Berejiklian by nominating for president of the upper house | AlexSmithSMH Rabe9 LucyCormack

Labor’s Penny Sharpe said Ms Maclaren-Jones would be a “willing puppet of the government” and her nomination could not be supported. Instead they backed Mr Mason-Cox.

“In a chamber where the government does not have a majority, the upper house supported a replacement president that had shown some independence from the government and who we believed would chair without fear or favour,” Ms Sharpe said.“I find it very disappointing ... we have the Labor Party and the Greens supporting a Liberal male ahead of a Liberal female. I just don’t get it,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“[Former premier] Mike Baird dumped this guy in 2014 as fair trading minister for a reason, he hardly had a glowing ministerial career,” Mr Constance said.
