Kevin Rudd’s position as Australia’s Ambassador to the US has been called into question in the wake of a stinging blow from Donald Trump, however a former foreign minister says he has the key to improve the situation.

Australia’s longest-serving foreign minister has admitted there is a “real problem” after Donald Trump’s blistering rebuke of Australia’s Ambassador to the US but has not given up on the chance Kevin Rudd could repair the relationship.

Former foreign minister Alexander Downer said it is a"huge test" for Kevin Rudd to amend a relationship with Donald Trump. Picture: Sky News Australia“I don't know much about him. I heard he was a little bit nasty. “We just don’t know, but if he were to win then it would depend on the work that Kevin Rudd has been able to do between now and then with the Trump people, so he will have to invest quite heavily in a bit of diplomacy with the Trump team, if not, with Trump himself,” he told Sky News Australia’s Chris Kenny on Thursday.

“Ultimately going to have to have good relations with the government and so if Trump were to be elected, then it’ll be a real question mark about the extent to which Kevin Rudd would have access to the Trump administration – that would be a real problem,” he said.
