The long-running series in which readers answer other readers’ questions on subjects ranging from trivial flights of fancy to profound scientific and philosophical concepts

It looks like one of those things to measure different size portions of uncooked spaghetti. Did the Romans eat spaghetti? Each of the holes is a different size. If you put the dodecahedron on to a pole that is broad at the bottom and narrow at the top, it will stop at various stages down the pole. These indicate months. The points on each face are made so that you can wrap a piece of string between two or more of the points. There are enough variations of this to indicate the day of the month.

Given the difficulty of assembly and the number of variables involved I would suggest an apprentice piece. I made a variety of pieces myself as an apprentice that would baffle future generations. They had no purpose apart from showing my instructors that I could accomplish the task set.The most persuasive theory on this I’ve seen so far comes from this knitter who believes they were used to knit gold chains. It looks like a puzzle toy made for a toddler.
