The traditional US broadcast networks are mostly missing in action during awards season: they've become, at best, marginal and, at worst, irrelevant.

Prepare the popcorn. We’re in the middle of what’s become known as “awards season”. The Golden Globes signalled the start of a month-long procession of prize-giving ceremonies for the entertainment industry, along with the accompanying display of designer fashions on a seemingly endless expanse of red carpets.

On Mondays through January and into mid-February, Foxtel has gala prize-fests on offer. So far, we’ve had the Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards. To come are the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards , the Grammy Awards , the British Academy Film Awards and the Independent Spirit Awards . The season culminates with the Academy Awards, which this year will be seen live from noon on February 10 on Seven – not the traditional broadcaster, Nine – with an encore at 7.30pm on 7flix.

The Golden Globe Awards have a substantial television component and the nominees and winners tell us something about the current state of the medium, and particularly about the dire state of free-to-air. Ramy Youssef won the Golden Globe for best actor in a TV series, comedy or musical. He humbly acknowledged that his win was likely to mystify many of the assembled guests who had likely never heard of him.We live in an age when, if you can afford to subscribe to the range of available services, there’s never nothing to watch.
