Deputy Labor leader Richard Marles says the high level of personal debt among Queenslanders is absolutely a matter for the federal government. Personal debt skyrocketed to near $3 billion in 2020, with Queenslanders having higher than the national average unpaid on their credit cards by the end of 2020.
“What’s being reported today in the Courier Mail is that Queenslanders have on average $4,000 in unsecured debt. That’s way above the national average,” Mr Marles told Sky News. “All of this is a function of the recession we’re going through and the difficulties we’ve seen through COVID-19. “It lays bare the fact that before we hit coronavirus crisis our economy wasn’t in great shape.”
