The Queensland government is 'losing control' of staff safety in schools with at least one teacher being violently assaulted while at work every day.

Over the past year across roughly 190 school days, teachers have filed 320 WorkCover claims where they were injured by assault or exposure to occupational violence.

Queensland’s Shadow Minister for Education Dr Christian Rowan has said the government is “losing control of safety in Queensland state schools”.“The number of teachers being assaulted in our state schools is truly shocking. Every Queenslander has the right to be safe at work, including our invaluable teachers,” he said.

The Queensland Education Minister Grace Grace replied by saying workplace safety was a “key priority”. “Staff are also supported by the Occupational Violence Prevention Procedure, which provides guidance to schools on steps to prevent and minimise the risk of occupational violence.”
