There have been emotional scenes in Queensland's Parliament as the state member for Cook introduced a bill to recognise Torres Strait Islander adoption practices in law.

History has been made in the Queensland Parliament with the government introducing a bill to legally recognise Torres Strait Islander adoption practices. The bill uses a number of Torres Strait Islander words in its titleIf passed, the legislation will allow a child to be adopted by a relative or community member —

"Today, I speak in my cultural truth that children who are raised under this practice deserve only love, respect, dignity and acceptance, and the questions about who they are and where they come from are irrelevant. The name of the bill — Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa Bill — is derived from languages from eastern and western Torres Strait Islands, and translates to English as 'for our children's children'.In the public gallery traditional owners and campaigners for the legal recognition of Torres Strait Islander traditional adoptions wept as the bill was introduced.

Adopted Torres Strait Islander children will be able to hold identity documents in their adopted family name for the first time if the bill passes Parliament. "But also professionally I have had some involvement in different roles so this is really the culmination of a lot of people's work both within government, within the community and elders really advocating for this change. The Torres Strait's many islands are rich in culture and traditional lore.
