Journalists could be jailed for up to six months for publishing allegations of corrupt conduct about candidates during election periods, Queensland's Attorney-General has told Parliament in a surprise announcement. The Opposition says it will merely "silence whistleblowers" during electionsThe proposed amendments would mean any complaints made to the Crime and Corruption Commission would be shielded from the public until they became a fully fledged investigation.
Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath said the purpose of the offences was to enhance the integrity of the state's electoral processes. "It's a process of what feels like battening down the hatches in a pre-election period," Ms Rae said."The change will undoubtedly restrain reporting on allegations of substance and MEAA members are simply trying to do their jobs.
"This is another attempt to cover up the Government's appalling integrity record and silence whistleblowers," Mr Janetzki said. "Importantly, the prohibition on publication does not mean that wrongdoers will escape detection or punishment.
ScottMorrisonMP AlboMP just what voters apparently dont need to know about! Corruption in the Government!
So for example, this would make the disclosure of corruption such as sports rorts illegal around election time. Can anyone explain to me how that is a good thing?
If you read the fckn link to your own ABC site, it says the Bill was withdrawn by the Qld govt. Hopeless, absolutely bloody hopeless is what the ABC has become under Buttnose.
Dictations
nope palletchook backflipped. thank you Alan Jones!
Democracy is dead, changing rules to suit themselves.
You can’t stop the signal.
Australia- creeping closer and closer to fascism. Governments must be held accountable and censorship and gag orders are not acceptable . FreeJulianAssange
Consistently providing false information in media should lead to penalties, losing their media license.
If anything we need more scrutiny during an election cycle. We need to hold politicians and the press responsible for misinformation at all times. Politicians deliberately providing misinformation/lies should = ejection from politics for life.
WT !
“Allegations”, prove it true then publish, maybe if media did a proper job there would be no issue
That's pretty undemocratic... Very much on point for ScottyFromMarketing
well i bet you is VERY HAPPY about that. abc = CCP
Guess it's up to Twitter and Reddit.
This country is becoming more like North Korea by the day.
And actually clicking on your link “Queensland Government withdraws Bill banning reporting of corruption allegations during elections”
Wow - in my feed I just read your other tweet this morning saying they scrapped that.
GayeCrispin Electoral bribes quietly rebranded under same but new 'voter reward' scheme
Another nail in our democracy. How long until our failed state is completed
Stupid move, it will backfire badly as people will now be highly suspicious.
Be good if we could ban corruption itself
UN supervisors needed in Australia , America and the UK after these last few years and the strange results ........now trying to ban reporting of corruption sheesh ? 😏
Political triads are a trump card.
GayeCrispin So THIS is the only interest they have in false reporting? THIS. maybe because allegations would probably be true in this case. Remember posters in chinese with AEC camouflage. And emails about ALP candidate having Covid19 and withdrawing.
Well well well who is getting the wind up.
This can’t be true. I cannot accept we have become this corrupt. To rule that corruption cannot be reported on is the antithesis of democracy and the role of the fourth estate.
This will not end in a manner the authors would like. To see first hand how this will play out look no further than the recent elections in SEAsian nations where corruption is rife.
Snuck it in during the Covid distractions just like the registration increase
Qld Labor banning journalists from reporting on allegations of corruption referred to the CCC during an election campaign. Joh would be proud. What they are trying to hide?
Victoria is already a totalitarian state. Queensland is seemingly on the road there too. Soon we’ll all be wishing we had spoken up when there was time...
How about truth in media laws instead.
They should also ban whistle blowers and the opposition from accusing government at election times or otherwise. Government needs quiet time to think about how to ruin lives of millions of people and the environment.
How are we supposed to make judgement calls if we don’t know the truth - all of it! How do we get the truth though, when all we seem to get is false from the American’s stable? Come on ABC do your best investigative work, unbiased.
I would prefer the donation lists be published during campaigns. That’s often the real teller
This is when the rorts happen.
They have made a whole set of laws undermining our constitution. This is another example. They have taken over, rugged the game in their favour. They are not even pretending we live in a real democracy anymore.
Well there’s merit in the belief that opponents can change the course of an election with false allegations so maybe the ban is the lesser of two evils.
Maybe the USA needs this
That's a nope! I understand what they are trying to do but this is not the way. If allegations are made and found to be baseless, goal time for the accuser and if the judiciary think it influenced the outcome, re-election required.
While I advocate for transparency, targeted attacks from Murdoch swill have brought down several Govts 2 Aust ex-PMs (Rudd & Turnbull) are demanding a Royal Commission into Murdoch's influence in politics Qld's Courier Mail is one of the worst offenders and wears this auspol
Election process usually only a month. Claims of corruption can surely be made before that!
Nothing to see here.
Looking at some of the replies, looks like a few title skimmed. Might be worth a proper read to understand the article. This should be applied in all levels of government, every state.
WTF
Is this Queensland or Australia wide? Wouldn't reporters in other states so the job? I don't think it's good for democracy, but I also remember what happened to Michael Towke when a certain cohort of the media destroyed him to get Morrison preselected
How are voters meant to make informed political decisions without all the information...this is not okay DoBetter
Anything to stop all of the corrupt bullshit from the Qld labor party coming out! Lying incompetent inept hopeless pathetic Rsoles! Labor has to go!
Not suspicious at all...
I am ok with this, MSM should not be allowed to report on any allegations. They should only be allowed to report on illegal actions if the accused is found guilty.
In Queensland not NSW or Federal elections and if I was not a registered reporter? Citizen reporters? In the interest of the public and fact reporting ‘with fear or favour’?
WTF
Wrong picture why?
So let me get this straight... BAD - Reporting of Corruption GOOD - Corruption auspol
Considering they only come up with lies & 🐄💩 against Labor during elections, this is good. We desperately need TRUTH in media laws in Australia to control our biased lying media!
This would be outrageous if we hadn’t all lived through the reign of Emperor Murdoch and his henchmen. It’s heartbreaking that we find ourselves here.
Does this include opposition ads?
Strange.
Nope. No sign of entitlement there. We’re watching our political system openly disintegration right in front of us and at an alarming rate. Politicians are no longer working in the interests of our country. They are there to get all they can and to stay in power no matter what
Remember when Baranby Joyce’s fanily were roaming the streets with a megaphone speaking loudly about his affairs, and the media silenced themselves during the by-election, and he won? Yes we all remember when it’s convenient for the media to be outraged!
Not a bad idea really.
If true, we're heading in a world full lies folks. This is about the US election. The stage is set for Democrats to cheat their way into running the country.
QLD labor government you mean
🤮🤮🤮
ABC conveniently omits “QLD” govt from the tweet. This is how biased media looks like.
This isn’t right. Transparency in the election process should be paramount in a democratic nation. This is another indicator in a chain of instances that leaves me feeling just that bit uneasy about the nations direction, again.
This should help Angus Taylor and Stuart Roberts.
Curfews, lockdowns, shuttering of businesses, subsistence cash handouts to the masses and now censoring the media. THIS IS COMMUNISM
FFS How does this advance democracy?
Another ScottMorrisonMP ploy so the Labour government can’t list all his and the LNP’s corrupt practices. Once again hypocrisy as at the last election that’s all they did.
Unfortunately for Anna, most Queenslanders know how to use the internet. So they can get the news from other states. Or countries. Just like we did with Pell.... that was hilarious. How papers couldn’t report on it but CNN could. Oh Anna...
So would it stop politicians making such accusations on their FB pages or twitter etc.? Seems pretty pointless. auspol
The result of ABC fake news?
Well that wipes out murdoch press. What fiction cam they come up with now? Lol
Censorship
wtf mate. even if journos are shit you can't just be doing evil things like this
not suss at all...
What a shame our media is at this level of mistrust, but it's deserved.
This is not good
How democratic
That sounds corrupt in itself.
Why, do they have something to hide
