A voluntary flood buyback scheme was launched by the Queensland government after the 2022 floods , with the acquired properties taken over by councils.Hundreds of properties purchased through the Queensland flood buyback program are being converted into more than 55 hectares of parkland and open space that will be added to Brisbane and Ipswich suburbs.
Brisbane City Council has acquired 285 properties through the scheme — adding up to about 208,000sqm or 20.8 hectares, which is the equivalent of about 25 rugby league fields. "Where there are opportunities for new and expanded local parks, we will consider features like additional trees, picnic tables and play equipment in consultation with residents," Ms Davis said.
More than 35,000 squares of land has also been acquired in Oxley, while 28,000 square metres of land has been purchased in Boondall.Even more land has been acquired in Ipswich through the voluntary scheme, with 161 properties settled amounting to more than 37 hectares.
