Over the past two decades, it’s become accepted wisdom that the road to victory in Australian politics runs through Queensland. auspol ausvotes ausvotes2022 election2022

Shadow treasurer Chalmers, out on the road in his electorate in Brisbane’s deep south, says Matt Burnett, the candidate in Flynn, is “outstanding”. But he agrees it’s likely that Labor might pick up regional seats such as Flynn or Leichhardt – or Brisbane seats such as Brisbane and Ryan – but not both, given how the issues in south-east Queensland diverge from those in the regions.

Labor’s belief that it can win Dutton’s relatively marginal seat has dimmed, compared with 2016 and 2019. “My sense of the mood on the ground is there is not a mood for change,” Dutton says. The defence minister is also confident that Brisbane MP Trevor Evans and Ryan MP Julian Simmonds will hang on.

But swings are rarely uniform and, on the ground in Brisbane, the mood among voters is sullen, diffident and unimpressed. Something has shifted in the state of Queensland, a fact hinted at by the lack of action north of the Tweed River. “I’d like Labor to win, for the working man, you know, but look what happened under Kevin Rudd – didn’t he produce $3 billion worth of debt?”Clark replies: “I’m undecided at that moment. I liked Kevin Rudd and I’ve always voted Labor.” But now he isn’t so sure.

He recalls the local MP helping pack and personally distribute hampers for families who were doing it tough during lockdown in the hard scrabble satellite city to Brisbane’s north. He took notice, though, when Morrison was asked recently about the help available to renters and the PM suggested people look at buying a house.“Where do I get $600,000 to buy a house? I can afford to pay my rent and bills and then I’m broke. I got paid yesterday, I’ve got $85 left in my account,” the father of two says.

Politics is broken and media - both traditional and social - only seem to be making it worse. I'm sure your reporter corrected him, as well as what the current fed gov has added. Right? $3B haha we paid more than that for a sub that we walked away from.
