'I hate it': Queen Mother's royal castle once occupied by Sir Robert Menzies opened to the public for the first time in decades
In 1965, Menzies was appointed Lord Warden by Queen Elizabeth II, likely in recognition of his time as Australia’s wartime Prime Minister between 1939 and 1941. “It’s the late Queen Mother’s taste in exuberant late-70s decor — and that this was surely the only place where she lived in a three-bedroom flat.After the Queen Mother died in 2002 she was replaced as Warden by Michael Boyce, Britain’s former Chief of the Defence Staff, who lived in the castle on and off until his own death in 2022.
