A Queanbeyan school has been told by the NSW Department of Education to return to normal, full-time teaching hours after telling students in years seven to 10 that they should stay home two days per week.Queanbeyan High School said on Monday that some students would have to learn from home two days per week due to a staff shortage
"Due to the number of teachers on leave in addition to the permanent positions we have been unable to fill, we are moving to mixed-mode delivery operations," Ms Green wrote in an email. In a letter, the NSW Teachers Federation said the school had implemented the reduced teaching model on Tuesday, with some students learning from home.
"We have attempted to fill these firstly through central appointment and merit selection, with no success," they said. The letter stated that the school often had no successful applicants for those advertised positions, adding that two positions in PDHPE and mathematics remained unfilled, with other teachers filling in when possible."This year a number of teachers have had extended periods of isolation at home as their children had COVID in turn," the letter said.
In their letter, the federation demanded the department resolve the staffing issues and asked that they be able to return to the reduced-hours structure if that request was not fulfilled.
