“These are tough measures, they will be put in place, and community safety as I said, is paramount here,” Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced a range of new penalties for young people who commit serious crimes in the wake of the North Lakes alleged home invasion that resulted in the death of mother Emma Lovell.

Some of the changes include increasing the maximum penalty for stealing a car, from seven years to 10 years. A more severe maximum penalty of 14 years will also be available for magistrates if the offence is committed at night or where the offender uses violence. Palaszczuk said the Youth Justice Act would also be amended, requiring courts to take into account a criminal’s previous bail history, while penalties will be increased for offenders who boast on social media about their crimes.

“We know that this has been a tragedy, a murder that has shocked Queensland and has shocked everyone,” Palaszczuk said.

Laws might change but judges and courts are soft and don't do their jobs

You Queenslanders Voted for the lefty Btch Pallet-Chook....

Too little too late.🤷🏽‍♀️

Change car theft from 7 to 10 years, not one juvenile has ever gotten 7 years, they get let off with a slap on the wrist. What a joke, Miss Pally making herself look good again 🤦🏻‍♂️

Not enough. Nothing to tighten the availability of bail. Nothing to make the breach of conditions an offence. Not enough. Two of the killers should not have been on the streets given their recent convictions.

Conservative-lite

I would like to know how many of these kids actually get a 7 year sentence, very few would be my guess. The current system doesn’t work and either will this one, it will not deter kids from committing these crimes.

There is no evidence stiffer sentences deter crime, but if it appeals to the Courier Mail crowd, the Palaszczuk government is always up for it.

Qld Opposition fires up calling for tough bail laws on youths after mother's deathQueensland's Opposition Leader has demanded Annastacia Palaszczuk return from holidays to address tightening bail laws for youths, as a petition calling for 'Emma's Law' to be introduced gains traction following the murder of a mother-of-two in Brisbane. He’s missing the point totally about youth crime. Stealing a car should be a mandatory 12 month stay on a farm west of Charleville with rehab services provided. I'd be happy if my taxes were used to pay for that instead of rail tunnels and Olympics. She ain't gonna change any laws while parli is on break so best she holiday now when nothing's happening. Also, we didn't hear DavidCrisafulli demand that ScottMorrisonMP return from Hawaii when Australia was burning.
