A Qantas plane made an emergency landing at a New Zealand military base on Saturday, with passengers stuck in a sweltering cabin for four hours while emergency work was carried out on the plane

.

Passengers aboard the Boeing 737, on flight QF171 from Melbourne to Wellington, were stuck on the tarmac at the Ohakea military base, about 150 kilometres north of Wellington.A woman whose partner was aboard the plane said passengers were told there was a problem with the plane, and it needed to divert to the base because it had better emergency services.

"Then they had to get really low, because apparently the wing flaps were gone. They couldn't get them to work," she said."When they pulled up, there were lots of fire trucks. Then they made them sit on the plane for four hours. "They turned the airconditioning off. Everyone was sweltering on the plane. They wouldn't let them get off because it was a military base.""The aircraft diverted to Ohakea due to a mechanical issue where it landed safely," he said."Usually in these circumstances the aircraft would divert to Palmerston, however this was not possible due to local weather conditions."Earlier, passengers tweeted about being stuck on the military base tarmac.

"Awkward when your international flight gets diverted to an air base, and they can’t let you off the plane because there’s no customs,"#QF171 Can’t leave plane because no customs, can’t fly plane as broken, can’t get replacement plane as at air base. A difficult problem to solve."

Is this one of Qantas zero emissions planes?

Glad everyone ok! I dont think Qantas has ever lost anyone due to crash. THAT is the point.

travel is so much fun these days

'I was OK. Thanks for asking.'

Who knew New Zealand had a military base?

Just imagine stuck on Manus Island for six years. Without the media to stick their nasty attitudes towards “illegal” refugees seeking a better future for their children. Yep, it sucks being a white, business or tourist held in a foreign country.

Sounds sensible to me. Would you rather the risk of loss of life? I am sure the passengers would not. If there were any whingers , they can, because the airline put passenger safety first. Next case your Twitter Honour.....

Big deal.......I am sure Quantas would have given free cans till the problem was rectified........

Snakes on the plane?

That is what happens when the Maintenence schedule for Qantas planes is cut down to essentials only. Qantas has lost its credibility - instead they paid the savings to the CEO in his $24m annual salary

You don't often hear of NZ being heartless bastards. Passengers could not get off and walk around, I would GET Force my way out and let the NZ troops shoot an Anzac dead for or being forced to walk around on NZ army ground because a plane is stuck stinking hot. Get fucked Kiwis.

Qantas flight forced to make emergency landing at NZ military basePassengers complain of being forced to sit in the plane on the tarmac for four hours after a flight between Melbourne and Wellington is forced to make an emergency landing at the Ohakea military base due to a mechanical issue. That would be one very expensive ticket to be pissed off with airline. For the price they charge you would expect special treatment when something hoes wrong Technical issues can happen from time-to-time BUT a PR failure by an experienced airline is unforgivable. Are we to believe passengers could not have left the aircraft and have been contained within a RNZAF base until Customs & Immigration arrive! What utter rot! Appalling reporting. It’s not an inconvenience to survive. Safety first.
