The cost of the government payments for 7500 Qantas workers over seven months will run to about $112 million. Qantas will also receive government subsidies to train crew, pilots and engineers to ensure they have the skills and accreditation to return to work as soon as the border opens, as well as support to bring its international fleet back into domestic service, with the exception of its Airbus A380 superjumbos.
Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce last week called the package “fantastic news” and that financial support for international crew would help the company “get our operations primed and ready to go once borders open”.
