Qantas pilots who agree to go on unpaid leave and not earn holiday entitlements for more than a year will be spared from forced redundancies | nickbonyhady

Qantas pilots who agree to go on unpaid leave and not earn holiday entitlements for more than a year will be spared from forced redundancies.

Peter Strong, chief executive of the Council of Small Business Organisations of Australia, said the expense of leave entitlements was "really going to hit home" for small businesses that had stood their staff down on JobKeeper during the pandemic.Mr Strong said the leave entitlements earned by 10 employees on JobKeeper for six months could total $40,000.

Professor Mark Wooden, a labour market expert, said most businesses should have reduced the amount they owe to workers in annual leave by asking them to take holidays before standing them down, even though they might be unable to travel because of the coronavirus. "With long-haul international flights in and out of Australia not expected to resume until next year, we won’t have work for most of our pilots for quite some time," a Qantas spokesman said."We have put a range of options to our pilots and asked each individual pilot to indicate which option best suits them."

If this is the calibre of the people who'll be running the country in 20 years God help us all. When I was 18, living away from home i had my first flat tyre. I took the whole thing off & chucked it in the wheelie bin! Ready to put the spare tyre on. I told my family the next day & luckily the bin hadn’t been emptied so I could retrieve it & take to the shop for repair 🤣
