Russian President Vladimir Putin has been welcomed to Beijing by his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping with a grand ceremony in Tiananmen Square.

Vladimir Putin has arrived in China ’s capital for discussions with President Xi Jinping , greeted by army bands and military dignitaries on the western edge of Tiananmen Square.

Picture: AP Photo / Andy WongBoth national anthems were played and footage from event shows soldiers lined up in a procession, standing to attention.Stated-owned media outlet Xinhua reported Xi said the two countries should mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties as a “new starting point”.

The Western world will be keeping a close eye on the discussions as Russian forces press ahead in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine. “All attention is now focused on our ongoing defensive operations and contact with the military, necessitating the postponement of all foreign visits,” he said on X.
