The Russian President's purported girlfriend Alina Kabaeva has been slapped with US sanctions more than five months into Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The 39-year-old former Olympic gymnast was among 13 Russian nationals added to the most recent update of the Treasury Department's sanction list.

The department said Ms Kabaeva “has a close relationship to Putin” and is the head of pro-Kremlin National Media Group, the largest privately held Russian media conglomerate. Earlier this year US officials made an 11th hour decision to remove Ms Kabaeva from the sanctions list over fears it could hinder peace negations, the Wall Street Journal previously reported.

“As innocent people suffer from Russia’s illegal war of aggression, Putin’s allies have enriched themselves and funded opulent lifestyles,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement on Wednesday.
