Exclusive: Labor has called for Australia's immigration program to be overhauled and curtailed in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, saying Australian workers must 'get a fair go and a first go at jobs'

"Our post-COVID-19 economic recovery must ensure that Australia shifts away from its increasing reliance on a cheap supply of overseas, temporary labour that undercuts wages for Australian workers and takes jobs Australians could do."

But migration is expected to crash in the wake of the pandemic, with the federal Treasury predicting an 85 per cent drop in next year's forecast intake of almost 270,000. Senator Keneally said a revamped migration program would ensure regional areas were home to permanent residents who settled in the community and started local businesses.

"Letting lots of migrants come to Australia is an easier way to drive economic growth than increasing productivity or investing in skills and training."

honestly ?Are they stupid using word FIRST...are they social engineering the USA model or just stupid lazy semantics ...common grow up labour you have a job to do

Go KK we are over the population Ponzi scheme

Chap down street who has been living in hope of his relatives moving here and joining him but he has had difficulty But I understand why AustralianLabor would stop immigration its a challenging time in history so dramatic decisions are needed for the next few years

really Labor is just unbelievable, no ones falling for this

You just can’t trust Labor first open boarders oh that was before COVID-19! now trying to appease unemployed, really we are onto you Labor

Finally! Should Always put Australia and Her People First!!!

Never thought I would be pro Labour...

Kristina Kenneally following Bill Shorten by masquerading as giving a crap now about Australians. Classic!

Aren’t you American?!? Therefore an immigrant? Ok, go back to America then. Your own policy.... hahahahah

And it begins TheFive FoxBusiness dagenmcdowell

// One Belt One Road

Are they saying when a company has two candidates in front of them, a citizen and a permanent resident, the company should choose the citizen? Please explain, AlboMP

Finally some commonsense

Dreaming as normal to get press. She should go back to the private sector. But I suppose the pension and perks to hard to pass up Peter_Fitz of course we need immigration at 230 k to 300 k per year. Covid 19 FK’d that up - stating the obvious!!!

?

Will Labor apologize to onenation who have been saying this for years and were attacked by Labor for saying it. UTurn BetterLateThanNever

sallymcmanus care to comment?

WLudbey The problem is most out of work Australians refuse to work picking fruit, cleaning toilets and the like.

Lol. A 100% back flip on their previous policy. Perhaps some one at the unions voiced their disapproval. Why is this muppet announcing it ?

We are going to face some time without guest workers. Time for Change.

What jobs in particular is she talking about? Many times I have advertised positions and surprise, surprise only temporary visa holders apply.

Liked that Kristina, and I am a right wing Liberal. Loved labor until they jumped into bed with the Greens and Unions...😟

How to grow economy when those imports are mostly on the dole and stay on the dole anyway....

We need a JobGuarantee

There is a large number of unemployed migrants in Australia, not contributing. There is not a lot of housing or jobs why bring in more migrants putting more Australians out of work and housing. Let's repair our backyard first is paramount.

Agree totally.. labour: this is how it should have been a long time ago.. immigrants take aussies jobs.. aussies first

If Australians would actually do the work in the first place we wouldn't need immigrants.

Good work KK. This will galvanise the racists and xenophobes.

Agree. A bit late though since both parties promoted this as economic reform....worked well guys.

you never deny racists both right and left

Labor Politicians🙄 The predicted 90% drop in immigration suggests this KKeneally's long line of media fails are becoming increasingly absurd. auspol

She and the Labor party must have been enlightened. We've been asking for this for years so that our children would have jobs. Labor has always been against it wanting anyone who they could get votes from to move here

How does this sit with the economists who are saying the reduced number of net migrants in the next couple of years due to COVID19 is going to slow Australia's recovery through lack of labour and reduced demand (immigrants spend like everyone else)?

..... starting with her job.

How right you are in saying this. Australia needs a fair go like the good old days

The old KK shell trick. She wants to increase permanent migration and shift temp visas to permanent residence giving them access to the social welfare gravy train. She’s not interested in Aus workers.

MrSirUgly Wishful thinking, our Hillsong spiritual leader scomeini has better idea in this matter.

Family reunions..... slippery slide maybe?

Yes, time to stop bringing in more people from overseas, & giving them job priority over Australians. This has to stop.

They're fucking liars immigration is a ponzi scheme for the economy which will crash work it out if and when economic refugees out way the taxes coming in what do you think happens even blind Freddie can see it

Without people coming in, Australians will lose jobs because there is no demand. We are not having enough children here and so this woman really needs to go back to economics for dummies and look at how we can get back on our feet without migration? It is not possible

Without people coming in, Australians will lose jobs because there is no demand. We are not having brought children here and so this woman really needs to go back to economics for dummies and look at how we can ger back on our feet.

I agree with her but how is she going to get Aussies to clean toilets for a living. Won't happen.

YES!

LouiChristopher Whinge whinge whinge

Unions have always tried to protect our wages and conditions, this is nothing new. It may sound selfish and xenophobic but it will be popular with many disillusioned with Libs lies about strong borders and the millions of working visas their donors exploit.

ScottMorrisonMP Come up with workable solutions for regions & cities other than Syd/Mel. Govt’s have dropped the ball on infrastructure & will never catch up. Current policy on addressing ageing population is marginal. Come up with a better plan for GDP.

At last, the ALP are trying to become relevant.!. Well it's a start.

Virgin has more of a chance being bailed out by the government than this.

Bit late as usual. Does KK ever do any homework.

is labor bringing back the white australia policy.

Is KK now Scomo's attack puppy🤔

This will only happen with a focus on being less reliant on imports and more self sufficient with local manufacturing.

Sounds like a Trump policy. Australian's first. This should have always been the goal. Trump was mocked by media and AustralianLabor and LiberalAus for doing exactly that. Orange man not so bad aye.

Yes absolutly close them down next week. Never to reopen . They are akin to concentration camps.

IF LIBERALS said this it would be “racism” and “xenophobia”. You watch the same critics fall into line here 😂. ShamelessHypocrites

The next Labor PM has been identified... auspol

...this will be standard practice for every other country - why would we not do the same?!

They could start with telstra and optus being compelled to employ locals only in their call centres. The quality of service has improved a bazillion per cent during Covid! auspol covid19australia telcos CustomerService

About damn time logic prevailed in the discussion on Australia's population. Immigration should not be fodder for gdp, it should be a means to achieving sustainable population growth that benefits all Australians.

Dutton has supposed to be running this show, multiple departments, billions of dollars. Why hasn’t Dutton done this already.

Maybe they finally realised their virtue signalling from the last election didn't work and decided to embrace a little common sense.

Covid19 has demonstrated that Australia’s currrent temp migrant policy works and not the latter Imagine we had to provide job-seeke-keeper support to the 2.1m temp migrants on top of existing. Covid19 might be around for years. It’s easier to pivot with 2 mill less mouths to feed

Just stop migration thx!!!! The country has already been totally sold out ... it doesnt even feel like Oz anymore 👿

I agree with her. Jobs are not growing on trees atm. It’ll take a long time to recover

Tell Chairman DanielAndrewsMP , he just kept 10000 overseas nurses here who are now taking our nurses jobs.

Sounds like what Pauline Hanson has been saying for years

Especially the young people! Lowering retirement age to 60 will help too 👌

Absolutely!

Ha ha! Great strategy!

Kinda like America First, right? Someone has been doing polling!

For years ALP threw Aust workers on scrap heap, attacked unions, didn't change Aust visa system, eg. Gillard had visa holder run her PM's office, what's changed now? Whatever ALP says is just for votes. ALP didn't care about Aust workers; nothing's changed RealBobKatter theage

Better f’ing late than never I suppose. Definitely more chance of this with Labor than Libs

This is being done already, Labor a bit late

I too, hate economic growth and multiculturalism

Somebody's actually woken up to the most pressing.policy issue in Australia?

Immigration does not grow the economy. That is the furphy that needs to be got rid of If there are not enough jobs in a society then it is overpopulated.

Wow. That is our progressive party, yeah?

Wow that’s a 180 degree about turn for KK and Labor

Thanks Sherlock , We have been saying this for years , Labor is late to the party on this.

My goodness- did they check with China first?!

This call forms a common ground with Australians.

The pm said that immigration would fall by 85% for the 20/21 year. How much lower does labor want it to go?

.VoteSustainable Position on population and immigration

Blah blah blah. Nothing will materially change. Both major parties support Big Australia

SenatorWong tanya_plibersek where are your voices? You were voted in, she wasn’t....we want to hear from our voted in reps , in particular our female representatives.

I can't agree more

Sorry - not buying it. Both major parties didn't bat an eyelid for a decade while wages stalled and the aspiring middle class got priced out of median priced homes in our major cities. The credibility of the establishment on this issue is ZERO at this point.

Yes

is this a 'stop the boats' call? . justsaying

KK out and about after missing for weeks

Isn't that what Trump said

She must be unwell.

ciruswind scrap all jobs outsourced to OS phone farms - bring thoser jobs onshore

Okay. The truth is Her Aldi bag must be nearly empty and she’s looking for a refill from some dodgy Chinese influencer.

PopTheOzBubble About bloody time

This would be a first for Labour

Spoken only as a migrant could.

Racist bastards, here in Europe it’s called Populist Xenophobia.🇮🇹

Finally...

Labor is moving in right direction.

Nice coming from an immigrant herself. Only migrants will do the shitty hours and the shitty conditions in shitty places with inadequate infrastructure because their employers know they won’t complain about wage theft. Open up the regions with high speed rail and Ozzies may move

bencubby Please create different types of jobs, more entry level positions, and offer paid internships. There needs to be more diversity besides finance and marketing and more roles that do not require multiple years of experience.

Wow is old Labor coming back? Or will this be crushed under the heal of the progressive politics faction.

What KK at it again, the Govt has already moved to reduce immigration, thats never been a Labor position before. KK is so anxious to become relevant in her portfolio, her behaviour is a big turn off for most. Just NOISE.

This has nothing to do with racism but is about job development for the current population of Australia. Let’s hope that it’s adopted.

Sounds very Liberal to me.

Now you are talking Kristina that’s what we want to hear..👏

Historically this was always Labor's policy. The conservative forces pushed hard in 1950s to open up immigration and pushed Labor into it because they wanted 'Commie' threat weakened and Aus unions diluted. Check BobSantamaria Groupers DLP 1950sAuspolitics.

you a joke Keneally

Isn’t this an about turn by labour ?

Funny how Labor comes out with this the day after Morrison has already discussed it

Maybe they can try and overhaul the tertiary education sector as well

Hear hear! Employers that whinge they can't get labour are employers that won't pay what the labour is worth. I don't thick Aussies mind paying more for goods if it means our kids get fair pay. Employing cheap foreign labour is discrimination.

Makes sense for now

Better late than never.

rationaliza Shouldn't protecting the jobs of Australians have been Labor's priority all along?

and affordable houses... and social housing, and medical appointments and school places... neo-Liberal economics doesn't have anything else but the growth through population strategy...

bengarr Stop overpopulation locally and globally, including by lowering immigration to Australia from a record 200,000+p.a. back to the long-term average of 70,000, and increasing foreign aid to support female education (particularly in our region):

What happened to open borders? Are labor finally admitting they were wrong the entire time?

Our children who are now out of work must go to the front of the line for jobs.

Labor or the idiot keneally. Remember everytime she opens her mouth this happens.

Is this the Australian Labor party?

Wow I never thought I'd see the day the labor party turned racist and xenophobic the shame.

REFUGEES WELCOME !

Plus she needs to tell us her policy and opinion on 444 visas. She is amazingly silent on that. Seems to be avoiding it like the plague.

This should include 457 visas.

How about her beloved refugees she fought so hard for?

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? Labor turned into Racists? They no longer want open borders, and foreigners flooding into the country?

Has to b joke labor immigration they just don't work even worse kk in charge

Does this include a fair go for Aborigines in NT, and everywhere else labour? what about them policies they could do with a complete overhaul . Fair go what’s fair in this country! refugees in their own country, where is there fair go?

👍

Is this Pauline Hanson v2

There are far too many people migrating to Australia when infrastructure doesn’t keep up. Less hospital beds, overcrowded roads and public transport. Cities have become too overcrowded. Expanding populations doesn’t make a great country, look at Finland and New Zealand.

Hear, hear. A bit of commonsense creeping into politics.

Next minit theyll be cutting taxes and reinforcing family as the basis to a strong society!?

It is the problem that they dont want go or dont like the pay rate. Then gov has to hire immigration to solve this problem. This all depends on their attitude, as long as they want go for these jobs, naturally these immigrats wont get job and they will leave

Australia immigrants need to stop then resume and allow ONLY those that are a benefit to our society and that identity with our culture, values, religions and principals.

Whilst Victorian Labor’s Agreement with China remains hidden. All other China Belt and Road Initiatives require prioritising Chinese workers and contracts. SMH, have you asked KK and Daniels Andrews to release the Agreement with China?

Is that their way of saying stop the inflow from east and Middle East. Hard to believe anything from KK she is as lost as bill shorty and Chris Bowedhead

Maybe they should sort out the Victorian premier with him still goin ahead with the CCPs Belt and road initiative.

Sorry not listening! Unti Labor admit they caused this economic catastrophe, they have nothing to say about managing an economy!

Wait- no more convict ships?

START CARING ABOUT THE PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY, FIRST

Isnt everyone sick and farkn tired of ScottMorrisonMP & AlboMP vilifying unemployed when we have 1.5 MILLION Visa slaves here? IF they REALLY cared about unemployment wouldnt they can the 1.5 MILLION Visa slaves? & Coz they dont tells you its about driving wages/conditions down

PaulHRG

a change in direction....welcomed

Yes!
