Doctors could be prevented from prescribing repeats of certain antibiotics as part of a crackdown on superbugs.

The Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee is concerned automatic repeats are causing common infections to build a resistance to bacteria.

GPs can issue repeat scripts for common antibiotics currently, even when repeats are not deemed therapeutically necessary. Under the changes, repeat prescriptions would no longer be subsidised on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. Image: Getty
