The Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force’s inquiry, led by NSW Court of Appeal judge Paul Brereton, is examining various incidents between 2006 and 2016 in Afghanistan. An Australian Federal Police probe is scrutinising an incident in 2012 in which an Afghan shepherd, Ali Jan, was allegedly kicked off a cliff and shot dead.
As we report, Ben Roberts-Smith, a highly decorated ex-soldier awarded the Victoria Cross for service in Afghanistan, is alleged to have kicked the handcuffed Ali Jan off the cliff in 2012 before another soldier shot the Afghan man dead. Mr Roberts-Smith is also a focus of the Brereton inquiry.
