Thousands of protests have taken place in 32 cities across Russia just hours after President Vladimir Putin announced a partial mobilisation of the nation's military, signifying a major escalation of the war in Ukraine.

The protests have prompted Moscow authorities to warn anyone organising or participating in the protests could face up to 15 years imprisonment.

Mr Putin warned Russia would use"all means available to us" to achieve their goals in Ukraine in his first address since announcing the"special military operation" in February. The partial mobilisation means 300,000 military reservists - but not conscripts - will be called up to bolster Russia's forces in Ukraine.
