Protesters deliver letter to Garrick Club condemning exclusion of women

have delivered an open letter to its members saying discrimination on the grounds of sex is “nothing short of scandalous”.created “the potential for unfair advantage”

“Women have been systematically excluded from your corridors of influence and power, though, we note, are permitted in their capacities as cleaners, waiters or guests of men.” When an organiser called the club asking to be let in to deliver the letter, she said a man at the other end of the line told her “no, thanks” and hung up.

On Thursday, the Bar Council, which represents 18,000 barristers in England and Wales, reminded members this was a “vitally important” issue, and asked them to consider whether membership was “compatible with the views they espouse in their professional lives”.The same day, the protesters set out in their letter to the Garrick how membership of the club helped entrench established inequalities.

“Regardless of intent, the outcome is the same. The Garrick Club embodies the old boys’ club and maintains sexist inequalities and the male establishment.”
