Prominent Tasmanians call for state to raise age of criminal responsibility to 14

Australian of the Year Grace Tame, former Greens leader Bob Brown, and LGBTIQ+ activist Rodney Croome are among more than 50 prominent Tasmanians to sign a joint letter calling for the state to raise the age of criminal responsibility to at least 14.

"The scientific evidence is overwhelming that, at the age of 10, a child's brain is still developing, particularly in terms of reasoning skills, impulsivity and consequential thinking," the letter says. "Ultimately it will be a decision for each jurisdiction whether to raise the age of criminal responsibility."

Earlier this month, the Labor Party in Western Australia passed a motion at its state conference in support of raising the age of criminal responsibility to 14.

Strip-search should be banned, and not just for children, but it is absolutely necessary to detain some children. It can't be left up to the discretion of parents to discipline children. Some will be severely punished, while others will get off virtually scot-free. politas

Raise the driving limit. Make it an offence to drink before 21. They know alcohol affects the developing brain, so raise the consumption age to 21.
