An army veteran is following his son's advice to pursue his passions as a way of coping with the lasting effects of trauma.

Chris Ellicott's move to a coastal town has given him a new lease on life.abc.net.au/news/army-veteran-chris-ellicott-combats-ptsd-with-surfing/102627614It was a father-son road trip to Byron Bay that led former soldier Chris Ellicott to confront his post-traumatic stress disorder head-on.

"We were at Byron Bay and we just finished a surf and he said to me, 'Dad you look so happy, this is where you belong, you should buy a place around here'," Mr Ellicott said. The 49-year-old said while he "doesn't have a million dollars" to find a place in Byron, he bought some more affordable land down the coast at Nambucca Heads.Chris Ellicott says sometimes veterans just need to talk to someone who has been through a similar experience.

Mr Ellicott surfed when he was younger so his move away from Townsville to a small surfing town made sense."Every problem that you may have just seems to dissolve once you're out there. The friendship led to some spots on community radio. "I think the next step for someone suffering with PTSD or other mental illness is to start to feel better about yourself by giving back to the community."
