About 200 pro-Palestine protesters chanted slogans as they lashed the Labor Party and the prime minister for their stance on Gaza.

Scores of pro-Palestine demonstrators have crowded the entrance to Labor’s state conference and jostled some MPs before attempting to force their way inside the gathering.

Other rank and file ALP members were also surrounded as they walked into the conference, before security officers began shepherding attendees through the demonstration.Speakers at the Trade Unions for Palestine protest included Brunswick MP Tim Reed and federal independent MP Lidia Thorpe, who said Labor had been “sitting on the fence” when it came to the murder of Palestinian people.

A group of around 30 people had surrounded and heckled D’Ambrosio, Shing and Edbrooke, placing pro-Palestine stickers on their jackets, yelling that the group should be “ashamed of themselves” as they waited to be let into the building.Thorpe also lashed Labor politicians for not supporting their federal colleague Fatima Payman, who earlier this week accused Israel of conducting a genocide in Gaza.

Dozens of Labor members also turned their backs on Deputy Premier Ben Carroll at a meeting of party faithful on Saturday morning over conditions for school cleaners in Victoria. The motion, which was carried, called on the government to stop outsourcing contracts for school cleaners and to employ cleaners directly.

The state conference will on Saturday afternoon hear motions on the conflict in Gaza and on the party’s position. Some Labor members were also wearing keffiyeh scarves to show their support for Palestine.
