As a genre, crime is much-loved and (partly for that reason) much frowned upon. Most scarcely regard it as literature

Can crime fiction help save the world? Scots crime-writing legend Val McDermid delves deeper into the design, varieties, infliction and experience of human pain than anyone I’ve read except James Ellroy, but she clearly sees her work as a force for good. I’m with her.

, Theron plays second-fiddle to a dopey president who yearns only to return to B-grade acting and who, on being reminded of her role as secretary of state, asks: “Which state?” Gradually, you recognise a subtle authorial presence that is saying something important. In McDermid’s world, women are subjected to excruciating and mostly male violence but are also among the heroes and saviours. It’s a world in which women are humans first and women second. This is so refreshing.

Once, as a teen, I was wolf-whistled walking with my mum in the street. When I tried to explain why it was offensive, as well as complimentary, my mum – a professional woman – dismissed the idea. “I’d be delighted to be taken as a sex object,” she quipped. This view is still surprisingly prevalent. And while it may seem superficially reasonable, the system it underpins still appends women’s professional success and confidence to their sexual availability and attractiveness.

As I said on SKY News: change ' we are young and free' to 'we are one and free'. I’m sure the song they come up with another group will find it offensive so just leave as it is. The vast majority find it offensive we are going to change the anthem so where does this leave us All good but as most don’t sing, know or care about verse 2 and 3 all this for one lousy word.
