Players and spectators in a Geelong area football game ran for cover as a spectacular bolt of lightning hit a tree close to the oval on the weekend.
“I reckon the whole crowd was spooked. Everyone seemed to shudder and duck for cover as the crack went through.” Players ran off the ground at about the 25-minute mark of the third quarter during a heavy hailstorm on Saturday, amid thunder and lightning.The lightning bolt hit a tree about 30 metres north of the oval, and close to parked cars.
Mckinnon said the first two quarters of the game, which started at 2.10pm, were played in bright sunshine. “The lightning and thunder came and it was pretty horrific. All the players just ran off the ground.”
