“If you could choose to get an apartment for 100-grand less, not have to have a car ... why would we not let you have that choice?”

The plan to build more inner-Brisbane homes without parking for each resident has the support of developers and the Queensland Premier, but cyclists warn it must be coupled with improved infrastructure so people can get around safely without a car.

Schrinner told a Property Council of Australia forum the existing requirement to provide two car-parking spaces for every two-bedroom unit was “outdated” in inner-city suburbs with good public transport.He said the state government must approve the change before it could be offered to developers, adding: “The faster state government sign-off can occur, then we can get more affordable homes built sooner.

Council’s initiative was welcomed by the Property Council of Australia, with its Queensland executive director Jess Caire saying that it would “attract the investment needed to deliver new homes”. Miles said he supported higher residential living in South Brisbane’s Kurilpa Peninsula because it could encourage more housing supply.
