Pregnant women have been added to the federal government's list of vulnerable groups being prioritised for the Pfizer mRNA vaccine.
However, pregnant women were previously not prioritised for access, meaning only those over the age of 40 or who met other eligibility criteria could get the jab. Pregnant women who contract COVID-19 are at greater risk of serious illness and pregnancy complications, including miscarriage and pre-term labour., noting that given the current outbreaks in NSW, Victoria and South Australia it was "critical" that pregnant women have access to vaccination.Pregnant women are at higher risk of developing severe COVID-19, also posing risks to their unborn children.
The medical body noted that global surveillance data from large numbers of pregnant women hasn't found any significant safety concerns with any of the mRNA vaccines, including Pfizer.
