The printed posters, which gave out detailed information about a high risk sex offender who was reportedly living in the local area after being released with strict parole conditions into the community, were also shared to social media.
The posters included highly detailed information about the male offender, and urged members of the public to read further material about him. He has previously been found guilty of a string of violent crimes, including two different serious sexual offences, for which he has served time in prison. Since being released, he has once been convicted for breaching his parole.
News.com.au understands that putting up the posters is not an offence, but anything that might incite violence against an individual is considered illegal. “Police are aware of reports of flyers circulating in the inner west area,” a spokesperson for NSW Police said in a statement. The goal of the public register is to improve national protections for children. There is no suggestion the man targeted in the posters was a paedophile or had committed crimes involving minors.
