Political genius or footnote in history? Scott Morrison nears his May 18 date with destiny l deborahsnow

“I find his interest in my sunny disposition quite interesting,” Scott Morrison says, lounging back in the leather seat of his RAAF VIP jet with an air of self-satisfaction.

The pace is punishing. Each of the last four nights have been spent in a different capital city - Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Darwin. On the day of our interview, the prime ministerial jet is speeding towards the North Queensland garrison town of Townsville, where the seat of Herbert sits on a knife-edge.

A ferocious capacity to be task-focused is another Morrison hallmark. Witness his near monomaniacal dedication to "stopping the boats" when he was immigration minister. Or his falling out with Turnbull in early 2016, when Morrison as treasurer was going full steam ahead on a proposed GST increase offset by generous personal tax cuts, before Turnbull headed him off at the pass. Morrison’s former staff say they had clear signals from the then prime minister’s office to forge ahead.

Gazard is one of a small circle around Morrison who checks in with him regularly. “I send him messages, and he will call when he needs to, just running ideas past me, getting my take on things.” Others include Grebe, and long-time mentors Peter Costello [now chair of Nine, which owns“I used to talk to Peter a lot when I was treasurer,” Morrison says. “And occasionally to John. Now I talk more regularly to John and occasionally to Peter.

“Has the Newspoll us given hope? Yes,” says one. “Has it encouraged and mobilised the team? Yes. Does it galvanise donors and volunteers? Yes. Does it give us victory on the 18th? Not yet.”It's Easter Monday in the hotly contested seat of La Trobe in Victoria, a state where voters are expected to give the government a caning.

The decision to let the cameras in had some of Morrison’s advisers worried. He brushes off the suggestion it was a gamble, defaulting, as so often when challenged, to a kind of jut-jawed testiness. In the past, he’s declared the Bible is “not a policy handbook”, and deflected questions about reconciling his religious beliefs with some of his more heartless statements on refugees by saying Australians “aren’t looking for me to conduct myself as if I’m sitting on Oprah’s couch”.

DeborahSnow A mere footnote for the accidental temporary Prime Minister Hopeless to the core

DeborahSnow I find it incredulous that anyone in Australia wants a Liberal or a fcnnNational.
