The results of a survey sent out to all Queensland police employees show rates of sexual harassment are far higher than union officials believe because almost 80 per cent of incidents are going unreported.
The inquiry into the Queensland Police Service’s response to domestic and family violence incidents has heardresponding to damning evidence, it was Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers’ turn to respond.Lawyer Kylie Hillard, acting for the Queensland Women’s Legal Service, quoted figures from a survey sent to all QPS employees in 2021 regarding sexual harassment. Almost 70 per cent of QPS employees answered it.
“I do know some people, and this doesn’t just happen in policing, some may wish to pursue a complaint, and some don’t,” he added.“If you’re saying 98 per cent are doing the right thing ... then you don’t actually know the real figures of people who are experiencing sexism, because of the fear of coming forward and making complaints?” she asked.The inquiry heard that there are no women on the QPU’s executive committee and there are only 28 women in union leadership positions.
