A police chief in the Philippines has been killed in a freak accident while trying to seize evidence at an illegal cockfight.

Lieutenant Christian Bolok, the chief of the San Jose police force, bled to death in Madugang village after the blade, called a gaff, sliced his femoral artery, Northern Samar provincial Governor Edwin Ongchuan said.“He was trying to confiscate the roosters but the problem was the rooster’s blade may have been laced with poison,” Gov Ongchuan said.

Three farmers who had been taking part in the illegal fight were arrested and three others were being sought. “We grieve with our provincial police in the loss of such a committed and selfless officer whose enforcement of our community quarantine regulations has cost him his life,” Gov Ongchuan, who provided financial help to Lt Bolok’s family, said in a statement.

Police and protesters clash at Djab Wurrung Embassy campPolice mobilise to clear Djab Wurrung Embassy site of protestors in the wake of the felling of a 'Directions Tree' yesterday, while the Victorian Premier stresses his government's ongoing engagement with Eastern Maar Traditional Owners. 'Directions trees' are a made up concept given to Aborigines as their culture by some wannabe JK Rowling. Mixing a placenta with a seed then that seed growing into a tree is obviously not something that happens consistently. All it proves is that abos don't understand seeds. I’m not even part of this aboriginal family but I too am absolutely outraged at the felling of this tree!! Irreplaceable, forever gone. It was a precious symbol to so many. Find another tree
