Police charge US man with Wachira 'Mario' Phetmang's murder l jakesaulwick

Police have charged a US national with the killing of a man whose body was found wrapped in plastic at Sydney Olympic Park last year.

The man, Alex Dion, was extradited from the US and on Sunday morning arrived at Sydney Airport and was taken to Sydney Police Centre. He was charged with the murder of a 33-year-old Thai national, Wachira "Mario" Phetmang. Mr Phetmang's body was found in plastic and covered in a mattress protector on June 6 last year, just near a on-ramp to Homebush Bay Drive. In a statement on Sunday, NSW Police said they had established Strike Force Sinder to investigate the murder of the 33-year-old Mr Phetmang.Detectives from that taskforce were granted an arrest warrant for a 38-year-old suspect who they suspected had already travelled overseas.

Mr Dion was arrested late last year in California on an unrelated matter. Detectives from Strike Force Sinder travelled to San Diego to assist with his extradition.Mr Phetmang worked in hospitality and, prior to his death, was last seen in Hurstville. The US Associated Press reported that a search warrant filed by the FBI said that a boot believed believed belonged to Mr Dion was found with Mr Phetmang’s body, with the matching boot later found in Mr Dion’s apartment.

An autopsy on Mr Phetmang found that he had suffered multiple skull fractures and more than 20 wounds to the head. Mr Dion left Australia for the US two days after Mr Phetmang’s death, AP reported.
