The McKell Institute's edwardcavanough says the plight of backpackers working in regional agriculture is a systemic issue linked to visa stipulations that require foreigners to work at least 88 days in the regions to remain in Australia.

The McKell Institute's Edward Cavanough says the plight of backpackers working in regional agriculture is a systemic issue linked to visa stipulations that require foreigners to work at least 88 days in the regions to remain in Australia. "There's no reason why these workers should be getting paid under the legal minimum wage," he said. "Just because they're foreigners typically doesn't mean farmers can get away with paying them below the minimum wage.

" A new report has found widespread exploitation of workers on holiday visas is occurring on farms all over Australia. The study, undertaken by the McKell Institute, found backpackers working in the fruit-picking industry are being paid as little as $3 an hour, with some even coerced into unpaid labour. It also found workers were stuck in crowded, over-priced share accommodation.
