Ms Ryan, who served as a Senator for 12 years, was also appointed the Labor Party’s first female minister.
She was the first woman to take on a portfolio related to women’s affairs, and was instrumental in passing laws that protect women from gender discrimination in the workplace. Ms Ryan was first elected in 1975, after campaigning on the slogan “a woman’s place is in the Senate”, and later served in Bob Hawke’s cabinet.She was born in Sydney in 1942, but moved to Canberra and was elected as one of the ACT’s first representatives in the Senate.
